A Local Nature Reserve running north from the heart of Chelmsford up the valley of the River Chelmer. The northern section between Valley Bridge and the footbridge has a mosaic of unimproved grassland, old hedges, scrub and riverine woodland. The southern section – closer to housing and industry – has more formally managed grass and trees, and a marshy area near the footbridge.

The northern section is good for nesting birds in spring, and look for dragonflies and kingfishers along the river in summer. Signs of otters have been seen and they may soon recolonise the river.
